Montreal has a rich cultural heritage that must be safeguarded and showcased to encourage current and future generations to think of it as their own and make wise use of it. The Société de développement de Montréal, with considerable expertise in the field of heritage and many years’ experience in the city’s historic district, asked an expert committee to assemble a group of heritage sites on the specific theme of Montreal as a continental and Atlantic hub. The group they suggested covers only part of Montreal’s heritage, but it is a sufficiently coherent whole that the results of the study deserve to be released to a wider audience. The North American Conference of the Society for Industrial Archaeology is to be held in Montreal in May 2003, under the theme of Montreal, A Continental and Trans-oceanic Turntable, 1850-2000, and will be the ideal opportunity for distributing the results of this study.
