The Commerce Design Montréal contest is an initiative of the City of Montréal (1995), carried out in partnership with the Quebec government. Produced by the Société de développement de Montréal, this activity is supported by the Association professionnelle des designers d'intérieur du Québec, the Fonds d'études et de recherches en design intérieur de l'Est, the Ordre des architectes du Québec and the Regroupement des centres-villes et des artères commerciales. The goal is to reward Montréal businesspeople who call on Québec architecture or interior design professionals to help them design their business premises. Every year, some twenty businesses are chosen by a jury of experts for their overall design quality. Since the aim of the contest is to encourage design quality by prompting other businesses to follow the winners' example, the businesses selected benefit from an extensive promotional campaign holding them up as models for the public and their competitors.
